“Little Fire, flying flying high up in thr Talamanca Mountains of Tarrazu…This is where you will find La Candelilla Estate, one of the first micro mills to be established in Costa Rica and a pioneer of the movement in the early 2000s. La Candelilla is owned and operated by seven siblings of the Sánchez family. The family have been working the land in Tarrazú for five generations, producing coffee in the same area for over 50 years. Prior to establishing La Candelilla, each sibling separately managed their own plot of land and delivered their coffee to a cooperative-managed wet mill for processing. During the coffee crisis of 1997 the Sánchez family made the decision to pool their land and start their own wet mill. After many years of planning, in the 2000/2001 season Beneficio La Candelilla processed their first harvest of coffee. Under the direction of General Manager Sr. Ricardo Hernandez, La Candelilla has since introduced different processing methods and planted exotic varietals to increase the appeal of the farm's coffees in the specialty market. Today La Candelilla is one of Costa Rica's most renowned micro mills.
